The Abertillery Blues
Festival is back for it‘s fourth year with a world class line up and
will be held over three days from Thursday 17th July to Friday 19th July
2008. |
|
The main events on the Friday and
Saturday will be held under a marquee in the beautiful setting of
Abertillery Park, this year’s festival sees the same
successful mix of Welsh, British and American Blues.
The festival has become one of the biggest Blues events in Wales and
this year its going to be even bigger, one of the most popular and
exciting live rhythm and blues acts in the UK, Dr Feelgood will headline
the Friday evening. Also performing on Friday, the 21st Century blues
man with his harrowing guitar work – Ian Parker. Voted best UK female
voice for 5 separate years by Blues in Britain – Connie Lush and last
but not least the distinctive and exciting music by Storm Warning.
On the Saturday evening we have Robert Cray coming
to Abertillery Park, this American Blues artist rocks, wails and plunges
way down to the bottom of the blues well and is unlike anything you have
heard before. Cray has won 5 Grammy’s for his soulful vocal and
instrumental artistry, he has also played at the Royal Albert Hall
opening a gig for Eric Clapton himself. They have played more than a
thousand gigs across the world. His second album Bad Influence shot to
number one in the UK indie charts while Eric Clapton paid tribute to his
colleague by covering the title song. He has recorded with the Rolling
Stones, B B King, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Chuck Berry, Bonnie
Raitt along with other giants – this is a performance you would not want
to miss!!
Supporting Robert Cray on the Saturday night, a fantastic line up of
International Blues artists. Opening the stage the Tyler Brown Band who
has been playing their individual brand of blues music around the
country for the past three years. Stunningly singular talent of American
blues artist, Samuel James. The Hard Travellers, this band has a
fantastic line up which includes Dave Sharpe (The Alarm), Henry
McCullough (Wings & Joe Cocker), Colin Allen (Dylan & Stone the Crows),
Zoot Money (Animals & Big Roll Band), Gary Fletcher (The Blues Band).
Last but not least Jon Cleary will also be performing. |

The Taste |
 |
|
 |
 |
|
Taste was formed in Cork, Ireland in August
1966 as a trio consisting of Rory Gallagher on guitars & vocals, Eric
Kitteringham`on bass, and Norman Damery on drums. In their early years
Taste played around the UK before becoming regulars at Maritime Hotel,
an R&B club in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
In 1968 the
original lineup split. The new lineup formed with Richard McCracken on
bass and John Wilson on drums. The new Taste moved permanently to London
where they signed with the record label Polydor. In 1969 Taste released
their first two studio recordings, the self-titled "Taste" first and "On
The Boards" soon following, the latter showing Rory and the band's jazz
influences with Gallagher playing saxophone on numerous tracks. In
November 1969 the band opened for Cream at Cream's farewell concerts in
London. Taste then began touring the United States and Canada opening
for Eric Clapton and Ginger Baker’s new band Blind Faith. Perhaps their
most notable performance came in 1970 as part of the Isle of Wight
Festival, joining such notable musicians as Jimi Hendrix and The Who.
They were well-received by those in attendance, ultimately being called
back for five encores. Later the same year Taste would once more tour
Europe before performing their last show on New Year's Eve in Belfast.
In 1970 Taste split leaving front man Rory Gallagher to pursue his solo
career. |

Feature Article
- No 222 December 2001:
New king of London blues
George is one of that select few who are
able to take their chosen influences and craft them into their own,
strongly identifiable sound. In George's case this is a grit 'n' groove
gumbo of wailin' Southern fried soul and down-home blues, closer in
spirit to some mid point between Memphis and New Orleans than his London
home. His album Little George Sueref & The Blue Stars (released
earlier this year on his own Pussycat label) has broken out of the blues
scene and gained glowing praise and airplay from the likes of Charlie
Gillett and Andy Kershaw. So who is he? How come his voice is so darn
soulful? And where did he get that lonesome, wailing harmonica sound
from? |
 |
 |
In the eighties Cardiff born
Little George decided to make London his home and from there he
began to build a solid reputation as a dedicated Blues & Soul man. His
love for down-home blues included the likes of Jimmy Reed, Snooky Pryor,
J.B. Hutto
& Muddy Waters, not to mention some of the great soul blues artists like
Johnnie Taylor, Clay Hammond & Sam Cooke. After sometime he joined
forces with the like minded & wonderful 'Big
Joe Louis & His Blues
Kings' and very quickly they became well known as being one of the
toughest blues teams around. Whilst paying his dues as Big Joe's Harp
player touring all over the world, he also featured as a vocalist and
soon became known as one of the U.K.'s finest and unusual blues singers
and not surprisingly began running his own band as well as playing with
Big Joe and then went on to win the 'Blueprint' magazine "Harp
Player Of The Year" award 3 times.

never heard your music before…also how does the
music of each differ?
My sound as Trafficker is not strictly blues
but rather a mixture of British blues, retro rock and hints of jazz and
folk. It’s where I came from so it will always be there in whatever I
do.
I am currently working on my acoustic performance and it will be a mix
of the Trafficker style and traditional Delta blues songs. I guess as I
write the songs, Trafficker and my acoustic set will be very similar |
