“I’ll introduce you to a piece of my mind”
(Amy Barton - ‘In This Life’)
Amy Barton, 19, is an acoustic singer/ songwriter from Clitheroe,
Lancashire who began playing her guitar October 2007 and hasn’t put it
down since!
Already gaining compliments from the likes of ELTON JOHN BAND/ DESERT
ROSE BAND Guitarist JOHN JORGENSON, Amy is currently on tour
with The ANIMALS & FRIENDS (with original Animals JOHN STEEL
and MICKY GALLAGHER) and also with SPENCER DAVIS who is
the Special Guest. Amy also opened for THE GATHERING OF: Legends
of Folk Rock during their UK tour last October.
Being the daughter of musician Peter Barton, Amy acknowledges
just how much music has already informed her life: “Ever since I was a
small child I'd sit through sound checks and go to my dad's gigs”.
James Taylor, Bob Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Jack Johnson, Jonny Cash,
Jeff Buckley and Jason Reeves are acknowledged influences, too.
As Amy begins to shape and refine her writing and performance –
searching for that individuality, she shows no signs of any
empathy/sympathy with the celebrity-obsessive culture of so many of her
generation. “Ever got lost on your own path?” she wonders in ‘I Believe
Again’… Amy prefers instead to observe, learn and absorb all around her
– growing, growing like so many of those artists of decades ago, whose
guiding lights were perceptive enough to see the benefit of nurturing
the artist. “I feel lucky to have had the chance to discover the passion
I have for music and learn and grow through it from such a young age."
' I just close my eyes and i see it, i feel an emotion and the only way
to descricbe it is by writing the words then just add the music- thats
all there is to it. I never change the lyrics to my songs for that
reason, their must be a reason for every word'
Amy has been recording with CHRISTIAN MADDEN of Lancashire/Texas
band, THE EARLIES as producer (an intriguing proposition, given
that The Independent described the band as “ a very English kind of
folk-pschedelia…with a smattering of Beach Boys-type harmonies” ) , as
well as working with guitarist extraordinaire and Fairport stalwart
JERRY DONAHUE, a musician who has known, recorded and performed with
many of those supreme talents who were allowed the space to develop
their craft – Richard Thompson, Sandy Denny, Joan Armatrading, Chris
Rea, Gerry Rafferty – to name just a handful.
“Amy is a very fine singer with a uniquely identifiable voice”, Jerry
said recently. “She is also a very good writer, composing songs with
meaningful lyrics and melodies.” And he should know.
Jerry will be producing Amy’s debut album
'I want to rise the bar and keep learning and growing as a person, as a
singer/songwriter and get my music out there!!!'
