The Islwyn
Acoustic Guitar Club, sometimes know simply as Islwyn Guitar Club or
islwynacoustic, was established in January 2002 and is Wales's only
music club/venue specialising in the acoustic guitar.
Although the main focus of the club is the acoustic guitar, our events
are diverse ranging from solo guitar, singer-songwriter, duos and trios
and, occasionally, lute, baroque guitar, English Guittar, Oud, Electric
guitar, Chapman Stick or bass guitar recitals.
The club's musical fayre is also diverse with contemporary, early and
classical music, folk, world, jazz, blues and progressive rock all being
featured at the club at sometime in the last four years.
We usually meet once a month, on the third Friday, at the Crosskeys
Hotel at Crosskeys, north of Newport in south Wales.
The usual format of the meetings is: a workshop with the guest artist (7
til 8); a play around/open mic session, where members and visitors can
contribute to the proceedings (8 til 8.45); and a concert with guest
artist (9 until close)
The club occasionally holds concerts at other venues (e.g. Newbridge
Memo, Blackwood Miner's Institute, Risca Rugby Club) or on other days of
the week.
We also meet fortnightly at the Institute in Crumlin for a
beginners/intermediate guitar class. The tutor for this is our club
Chair Chris Fry.
The club is a constituted non-profit making body, with over 60 members
in 2007, and is run by a management committee consisting of officers
elected at the club's AGM.
The current management committee currently consists of: Hon President -
Graham Pearson; Chair - Chris Fry; Vice Chair/Bass
Events Secretary - Andy
Long; Rob Southall -Secretary/Treasurer; and Olivier Anton - Assistant
