On first receiving’
Keep It Hot’ I was a bit confused by the art work a Monet/Van Gogh style
painting, I thought Pepper had sent me by mistake one of his secret
stash of earth music CD’s!! but not to worry it was a wolf in lambs
clothing.
Recorded at Cape
Elizabeth, Main, USA, with an eight piece band featuring Pepper on drums
and vocals with a keyboards and brass section. Keep It Hot opens up
with an upbeat instrumental Chicago groove number ‘ Magahett’s Mood’
written by guitarist and vocalist Mike Hayward, by the sound of it all
the members of the band get a little solo and the track grooves along
nicely.
Pepper and The
Sensations maybe from the east coast but the style is definitely West
Coast and Chicago with loads of influences ranging from Howlin' Wolf to
Junior Wells. Keep It Hot is full of
little gems such as a brilliant versions of T-Bone Walkers ‘The Hustle’
and Willie Dixons’s ‘My Babe’
Keep it Hot has some
great grooves to keep just about everyone happy, from a jitter bugging
version of My Babe to a sleazy smoochy version of Duke Robillard’ Kiss
Me Baby’ there’s are touches of Peter Green on this track - not a
bad thing! All in all this is an
excellent good time album, which takes you back to the great swing era
of the 50’s Chicago bars, great for listening to with a bunch of friends
and just having a good time.
If you get a chance to
see Pepper and the lads take a good pair sneakers, because your feet
won't stop tapping to the beat and your butt wont be doing much sitting
!
Highly Recommended
